My time here in Nepal has been nothing short of amazing. I have meant countless incredible people and have had a truly unforgettable experience. My host family was the most loving group of prople who entertained me, comforted me, and made me fell completely at home. Mt. Makalu, the school at which I worked was really great. The students were adorable and fun and the teachers were very supportive. The staffs were also a huge help in making my first trip to Nepal phenomenal. I will miss everyone immensely and I hope I can return to Nepal soon! Pln;

Everything through Real Nepal has been great. Our homestay was amazing. We could not have asked for a better family: they treated us so well. Mt. Makalu was also a great school that every volunteer should feel honoured to be a part of. Our homestay plus Real Nepal really helped us assimilate into the Nepali lifestyle. I wish I could stay longer and get a chance to return. Thanks so much for everything.

Thanks Guys! I love Nepal! Highlights for have been all things elephant in Chitwan, getting out on the lake in Pokhara and all the greak kids in Pokhara at Himalaya Children’s Care Home. Thanks for the great Nepali lessons Sanzita even though all the kids were Tibetan. Advice to other volunteers would be to enjoy thamel for a few days, do Monkey Temple, durbar Square + Patan, then get out of Thamel. Pokhara for me was amazing. Great people and nice and peaceful but plenty to do. Thanks to all the guys at REAL Nepal.

Incredible!

This has been the best trip ever! Right from the start it was amazing. Arriving in the middle of a strike was a little daunting but Sanzita helped out there. Real Nepal guys are great. The language lessons, the sight seeing (even if we did miss the bus!), Chitwan, it was all fantastic! Chovar is excellent and the kids are gorgeous but the language barrio is very difficult. Relationship Nepal: What can I say…..? Fantastic! Krishna+Laxmi are a god sent. They have done some fantastic work in that place and the kids there are beautiful. I can’t wait to come back. See you all soon.

I love you Nepal! I’ve had an amazing time here in Nepal. The sightseeing in Kathmandu was wicked and I had a faboulous time in chitwan.. DEFINITELY do elephant bathing. Everything was really well organized (even if we didn’t know what was going on, it always seemed to run smoothly). Thanks to Krishna for the superb Nepali lessons – she is a fantastic teacher. Thanks also to kshitiz who gave us a great introduction to life in Nepal (and night life in Thamel), as well as sorting all our placements and ensuring we got there safely during all the strikes! Our experience would not have been the same without you! My placement was in Lakeside, Pokhara, at the Himalayan Children Care Home. This is such an AMAZING orphanage. The monk, Lama Pasang, who runs it is such a nice guy and they welcome you into their home with open arms. You teach maths and English to the children, which can be a challenge, but is really rewarding. I loved it there so much. Really sad to be leaving L Emily Benson Emily.k.benson@hotmail.com

God bless Nepal. A fantastic, diverse country which provides everything. The buzz of Kathmandu versus the tranquility of Pokhara and Chitwan. I only had three weeks in Nepal which was far too short. The volunteer placement was only a week - in reality was only 4 days owing to the strikes(get used to those). Nonetheless, the placement in Thulakhet(1 hr from Pokhara) was fantastic. Teaching in the resource centre was great fun and the kids find it enjoyable and are keen to learn. Real Nepal are supportive and helpful. Stay relaxed though if itineraries are ‘’soft’’ and the strikes can throw plans off! For thrills the mountain flight, paragliding at Pokhara and the Bunjee at the last resort are well worth the money. Have fun, it is fantastic!!

Hello! I’ve had a great but bizarre time in Nepal! Having arrived crippled from a motorbike accident (at the same time Kshitiz was in one), I wasn’t really expecting to do much. However I managed to get what I wanted(fun!) from this experience – its been great! Anyhow, good fun will come back non crippled!

My birthday today! Celebrate last night in the Buddha bar with the great bunch of people I met with Real Nepal. It has been a mind blowing experience. Partied in Kathmandu lots, ate lots of great steak, recommend the Everest Steakhouse and Rum Doodle. My placement was in a monastery, the monks were lovely. The small ones were cheeky and had some definite kung fu moves! The temple and monasteries were amazing, worth paying for a guide at Pashupatinath. We hired a motorbike and rode to Pokhara, the views at Sarangot were amazing. The bike ride was an unforgettable experience but if you do it look out for a top bike like we did that can handle the pot holes. Enjoy!

Dear Real Nepal team, I spent two weeks on the gap programme where I taught some English at Khwalung Monastery in Kathmandu. Such an experience, I teach maths in England, but this by no means prepared me for the experiences in which I would encounter due to his placement. The monks were a good bunch, Sahana and I had even nominated which monks to steal and bring home, if this became legal. It didn’t. We saw chitwan where we were growled at by Tiger (and some shop keepers!) and visited Pokhara by renting a motorbike and visiting the town like a real adventurer. Or Steve McQueen, who I thought I resembled. (But don’t look anything like him!) I was also ‘leeched’, the highlight of the trip…. Anyway, off to dear old England tomorrow, so off I pop. If you are reading this and have completed your placement, I hope you enjoyed your time in the country where everyone stares at you…!

2 nd August 2009

My 4 weeks in Nepal has been an amazing experience full of contrasts. Tthe natural beauty of Chitwan and the mountains compared with historic temples. Bustling tourist thamel compared with the quietude of my host village. Though one constant is the warmth and hospitality of everyone I have met. While the mountain flight and Chitwan tour were incredible perhaps my most memorable times were the simplest: playing games at lunch time with the children of my host school, drinking tea with the teachers, playing backgammon with my host family and watching the stars on a clear night. Patience and an open mind are key to a successful project and I have also learned not to underestimate games, playing and colouring as a tool for learning. A truly humbling experience I will remember forever.

1. Teaching in Local School: - Chitwan, Kathmandu, Pokhara
2. Teaching in Monastery and learning Buddhism - Kathmandu, Lumbini and Pokhara
3. Teaching at Orphanage Homes - Kathmandu and Pokhara
4. Working at the health post or Hospital - Chitwan and Kathmandu
5. Cultural Exchange program - (to Experience Real Nepal ) - Kathamndu + Chitwan + Pokhara

Where do I live during these projects?

All the volunteers live with the Host Family but a hotel can also be arranged upon the volunteer's request but the cost for the hotel needs to paid by volunteers.

What will I be doing on a typical day?

In a typical placement volunteers stay in a family where they eat Nepali food with the family twice a day (around 9 o' clock in the morning and 7 o' clock in the evening). Tea is served in the morning and in the afternoon. Volunteers will be working between 3 to 5 hours in a day on the projects. The rest of the time volunteers are free to do more sightseeing or  have the opportunity to get together with other volunteers and share their experiences. You will be able to travel to nearby towns to purchase things for daily use and could travel to other areas on longer vacation periods.

Will an English speaking guide be available for me for the time I am in Nepal?

We have a
local co-coordinator to support our volunteers in their projects. Our co-coordinator has good English to assist to our volunteer's needs. Our staff will be visiting our volunteers once in two weeks with regular phone calls from the office. If you bring your Mobile, we will provide you with a Sim-Card which helps us to contact you any time we want.

What can I do in my free time?

In free time we can organize , Trekking, Rafting, Jungle Safari, Mountain Flight and other sightseeing programs. In the village our co-coordinator can arrange activities like attending Nepali marriage ceremonies, Festivals, Visiting off the beaten track places, participating in a village development projects, Painting temples, Plantation, Making the green garden etc.. It all depends how busy the volunteers want to be.

ON ARRIVAL

Where do I stay during the training period?

When the volunteers arrive, they will be staying in a Hotel in Kathmandu and then will be going to the training village near by to Kathmandu to experience a village life and continue the language lessons. After a few days in the village volunteers will come back to Kathmandu to go to their placement. Or in this time if they want they can take a break and we can organize Trekking, Rafting, or Jungle Safari activities.

Who will do the language & culture training?

Our staff have got 12 years of Nepali Language Teaching experience. All of our staff had worked with International Organizations before.

Transport to and from the village placement to Kathmandu - What transport will be used?  Is this everyday?

To go to the placement for safety reasons we use Tourist Buses on the Highway, but in the local areas we use local buses. Please do not expect Car or AC or four wheel drive....

Accommodation and main meals during training period and placement - What meals will be included per day?  What meals won't be included?

In Kathmandu during the training period we will provide different Nepali food to help adapt to the change in diet. ex: Newari food, Dal/Roti, Dal/Bhat, and in the village with the Host Family the normal food is Dal Bhat two times in a day and two cups of tea and a snack in the afternoon.

Supervision by INFO staff to placement and volunteer - How will volunteers get in contact with staff?

Our staff will travel to the volunteer in the placements and also make regular phone calls from the office. Any time via phone they can contact to any of our staff. All of our placements are 10 minutes walk able distance to a phone place and some of our host families also have a phone at the house.

Two phone calls in a week - Is this you phoning the volunteers or our volunteers using the phone?

We give phone calls to volunteers two times a week,  and if more is needed they can phone us any time, they just need to give us a missed call at the office or our cell phone and we can call them back immediately. We can also provide cell phone Sim-card to volunteers if they want and have a mobile phone.

Chitwan National Park visit for 2 days - Elephant ride to see the one horned Rhinoceros and Royal Bengal Tiger, canoeing , Elephant baby center, Tharu Cultural Dance, Tharu village tour, Jungle walk etc. - Are these all included in the cost you have given on the site?

Yes,  it does it includes everything as it mentioned on the site.

Good bye dinner with a Nepali gift + last day accommodation - Where do they spend the last night?

In Kathmandu in Thamel.

What will volunteers need to bring as spending money?  What are the extra costs volunteers will incur?

In the placement you need money to go to City and make phone calls and use the Internet and maybe buy any western food or drink they need, 15 pounds extra each week will be more than enough.

In Pokhara before going Trekking the night stay and after trekking the night stay and food and drinks. 30 pounds will be enough. If they want to stay few nights more in Pokhara then 10 pounds each day ...

Do volunteers accommodation with the host family have a flush toilet?

Not many of the families have a flushing toilet, it is a simple toilet. But we will inform the family to make it nice and clean.

Volunteers need to learn to use water. If they use paper then it needs to be collected in a plastic bag and burnt later on every week in the night time. We will inform all of these things during the cultural training sessions.

Can I please have an outline of the orientation?  What is covered day by day etc.

2 to 3 hours language (There will be a break for half an hour in between so only 2 and half hours language)

1 hours Cultural information / Gender issues in Nepal

1 hours - talk about the placement and family issues / Teaching English

3 hours sightseeing

1 hour Different food program in the evening

Are any meals not included?

If volunteers eat out of our program. For example: today they have a Newari food program and if they say they would rather go somewhere else by themselves we do not pay for it. While traveling volunteers need to pay for their food but transport will be paid by the office. Like going to and from the placement, going to Chitwan for Jungle activities or going trekking on the way to Pokhara. However on the trekking we pay for all the food and accommodation, not drinks.

Is any transport not included?

If the volunteers require A/C car or taxi ...we do not pay . For ex: while going trekking we can go by bus up to Nayapul or walk to the bus park from Lakeside which is half an hour but if volunteers ask to go via taxi or a/c car than they need to pay for it which is 5 pounds.

How do I meet my host families?

Our staff will take you to the placement and stay there one night with volunteers until they are introduced to the family and the project people. We will be very careful in this regards. This is the main concern for volunteers. But we will help them and make sure that our volunteers are ok before we leave them.

What supervision do volunteers have whilst on the program?

We keep in touch with volunteers and find out if there is any problem about the teaching or with the host family. We go and assist our volunteers when ever they need us.

Are there any extra costs that we should be aware of?

Yes, there are a few extra costs and I think we have already answered it. Actually if the volunteers take 100 pounds extra then it will cover all the extra expenses but it also depends on the volunteers. Visas: First two months 30 US$ and each month another that is an additional 30 US$. Airport tax is 20 Pounds on leaving the country.

Can volunteers choose their volunteer placement?  Are they guaranteed to get it?

We definitely prefer to select the placement according to our volunteer's needs and interests but at the same time we need to make a balance for our Host families and the projects. We make sure that our volunteers are happy with the placements that they are going on.

Are there any special requirements volunteers should have? Qualifications etc??

Yes, if the volunteer who wants to teach English, if they have a good bit of  knowledge of Grammar this would be nice. Likewise if the volunteers want to join the Orphanage home program than if they have some experience working with children, or Dancing skills, or painting , or drawing skills this would be great. For the health and sanitation program or health post program, if the volunteers have some knowledge of medicine and are maybe medical students this would be perfect.

What is the cultural exchange?

Actually all the programs are a kind of Cultural Exchange. However the Cultural Exchange programs, volunteers will be staying in two different placements with two host families and doing more sightseeing. We will take them to visit a lot of cultural festivals. This is good for the two week program.

What will volunteers do in the medical placement?

It depends on their experience.

If the volunteers are medical students then they will have a lot of opportunity to learn and see a different countries health association, if the volunteers have some experience with medicine than they can work at the heath post or attending the health camps. We will also arrange a few days placement at the orphanage homes to check up the children and provide any treatment necessary as long as they have previous medical experience.

The 8 week program mentions white water rafting, is this included in the price you have given us?  Do they have qualified instructors during this?  Is the 7 days of trekking included in the price you have quoted us?

Yes, it will be included as part of the program fees and the 7 days trekking as well. For the rafting they will get a 2 hour class about the safety and all the instructions.

Not included are: flights, trekking equipment (can be rented in Pokhara)…

Our commitment:
